Oil change, minor service and major service describe different maintenance scopes. The useful starting point is your car’s requirements and service history, followed by an agreed list of work. A package name helps organise the conversation, but it does not tell you every item included or when your particular engine needs it.

THE ESSENTIALS
Understand the choices.
Start with the differences that matter, then explore the detail for your car.
01
Oil & filter
A focused engine-oil service. Confirm the required oil specification and quantity, the filter and included labour. Additional maintenance is a separate scope decision.
A routine maintenance visit with an agreed group of checks and service items. Ask which components are inspected and which materials or parts are actually replaced.
A broader maintenance discussion that considers the vehicle’s requirements and completed work. The exact list still depends on the car; major does not mean replacing every fluid or component.
Provide the make, model, year, mileage and engine details if known. Add the last service invoice, its date and mileage, and any relevant work completed since. A dashboard service reminder is useful context alongside those records.
If the history is incomplete, say so. Discuss the missing information instead of assuming an item was completed or automatically repeating every maintenance task. The appropriate plan should relate to the requirements of the specific vehicle.
02 / IN DETAIL
Separate inspection from replacement
A brake inspection and replacement brake parts are different items. The same distinction applies when a service lists battery, suspension, tyre or air-conditioning checks. An inspection list does not mean every listed area receives new components.
Ask for the proposal to distinguish checks, cleaning, top-ups and replacements. This makes two quotations easier to compare and helps identify items that would need a further discussion if the inspection finds a concern.
03 / IN DETAIL
Keep a fault enquiry visible
A routine service addresses maintenance. Investigating a warning message, unusual noise or change in running is a separate need. Describe that concern explicitly, even if you would like it considered during the same visit.
Ask which assessment is included and how any repair recommendation will be explained. A larger service package is not a diagnosis for every symptom, and a maintenance request does not establish which repair is appropriate.
04 / IN DETAIL
Compare like with like
Before choosing a visit, make the included materials, labour and inspection scope clear. The engine’s oil requirements, filter specification and additional maintenance can affect the estimate. Confirm appointment availability and the agreed work directly with the workshop.
Which maintenance items are due for this vehicle?
What is included as inspection, service or replacement?
Which concerns or additional recommendations need a separate estimate?
GOOD TO KNOW
Your questions.
Should I alternate minor and major services at a fixed interval?
Use the maintenance requirements for your vehicle and its actual records. Package names alone do not establish a universal alternating schedule or a single mileage interval for different models.
Does an oil change include spark plugs or coolant work?
Those are separate maintenance items. Ask whether they are due and included in the specific proposal rather than assuming they come with an oil-and-filter service.
What should I send to 212 Auto?
Share the car details, mileage, last invoice, service reminder and any separate concern. The team can discuss the appropriate maintenance scope and confirm the estimate and next step directly.
